“I don’t understand. What could you possibly need from me?” Jensen asked in confusion.
Logan turned back to Sut and Jensen quickly said, “He’ll be fine. He just needs rest. He’ll wake up with a bad headache though.”
Sighing, Logan said, “Let me take care of Sut and we can go somewhere and talk.”
Grabbing his cell, Logan put it on speaker, and set it on the console, as he picked Sut up. “Can you fix the stretcher for me so I can lay Sut down?”
Jensen quickly did as he was asked, just as Nick answered, “Logan, where the hell are you guys with dinner? We’re fucking starving!”
Gently placing Sut on the stretcher, Logan said, “Sorry, Chief. I took a detour and we got caught up in something.”
“You better be a little more descriptive than that, Logan. What’s going on?” Nick snapped.
Sighing, Logan grabbed his phone and sat across from Jensen, saying, “I went looking for Jensen.”
“You did what? Why?” Nick asked sounding more confused than pissed.
“Chief, I was really worried about him after he ran from the hospital a few days ago. Sut said he saw him going into one of the warehouses at the docks, so I drove there. We found him and he was hurt. I fixed him up, and―”
Nick quickly said, “Good, now get our food and get back to the station.”
Logan sighed, looked at Jensen, saying, “I can’t do that, sir.”
“Explain!” Nick growled.
“Jensen is my mate, sir,” Logan replied.
Nick was quiet for a moment, then said in disbelief, “Your mate?”
“Yes sir, and well, we had some problems. We crashed the ambulance and Sut is―”
“What the fuck do you mean you crashed the bus? Where are you right now, Logan? Is everyone alright?” Nick snarled.
“Nick, stop yelling and let me…You know what, I’m going to take Jensen to my place. If you can send someone to the docks area, you’ll find the bus, and Sut is sleeping on the stretcher.”
“Logan, I need answers. You need to stay there until I get there,” Nick argued.
Even though Logan knew Nick couldn’t see him, he shook his head saying, “Sir, please. I’ve never asked anything from you before, but I am now. I need to speak with my mate. I can’t explain things right now, but I swear to you we will. Just please, let me talk to him first.”
“Is he the reason for the accident?” Nick asked without hesitation.
“Yes, sir. But it was unintentional,” Logan quickly replied.
“Is he a danger to Maddox?” Nick asked.
Logan didn’t know how to answer at first, then said, “I can only say, Jensen would never purposefully hurt anyone, Nick. I’m only asking for time. Just a little time.”
Nick was quiet once more, then finally said, “Stay with Sut until I get there. I won’t ask any questions, I just don’t want Sut vulnerable until we arrive. The second I get there, you can go to your place. You have until the end of shift tomorrow morning, then I’m coming to your place with Destrain and some others for those answers.”
Logan sighed, and nodded. “Thank you, Nick. Sut is okay, he’s just asleep. Jensen says he’ll wake up with a major headache, but unharmed otherwise.”
“We’ll be there in five minutes,” Nick said, then hung up.
Logan looked at Jensen, who sat there with an odd look. “What’s wrong, pretty boy? You look confused and if I’m honest, a little scared.”
Jensen replied, “Because I am. I don’t understand, Logan. Why are you willing to defy your alpha? Or even better, a council member?”
“We’re mates, pretty boy. I want your story so that I know how I can help. We are going to walk this journey together and I know together, we can come out on the other end better for it. We are meant to be one. I know it. I just hope you will come to believe that as well.”
Sighing, Jensen replied, “I know you say we are mates and I would be lying if I said I didn’t find you sexy and sweet, but you know little about me and from what you do know, you can’t say we have much in common. I hurt your best friend. Now granted, it wasn’t intentional, but still, I’m not worth any of what you’re doing for me. I was kicked out of my home, dropped in this town, told to stay put until I’m needed and I’ve lived on these streets ever since. You said that fate knew what she was doing. You said she has a way of bringing people together that need each other. I asked you once and you didn’t answer me. So I’m asking again, what could you possibly need from me? I have nothing to offer our mating.”
Logan smiled, saying, “As you said, Jensen, we don’t know much about each other, but we do have things in common. I lived on the streets for many, many years, until the day I met Rune and he introduced me to Nick. My life was, and at times still is, a mess. I promise to tell you all about it. However, I know what it’s like out there. Scary, dangerous, and so damn lonely that talking to an alley cat is the only companionship you might find for days.”
“Or a stray dog,” Jensen whispered.
Logan snorted and nodded, saying, “Yes, dogs and maybe a mouse or two.”
Jensen shivered and squinched his face in disgust. Logan laughed. “Yes, I didn’t like those much myself.” Logan sighed, then said, “I want to show you something, Jensen.”
Logan turned and went into the medical supply shelves, removing a scalpel. Pulling back his sleeve, Logan said, “You hunger for magic. I would think that means you need it to survive.”
“What are you doing?” Jensen asked in horror.
Logan placed the scalpel to his arm and sliced through his skin. Jensen gasped and jumped towards Logan. “What the fuck!”
There was no blood, but there was a bright, multi-colored sparkle rushing from his body. Normally, it would shoot straight into the air as the magic left his body. However, this time, it aimed towards Jensen and he was pushed back onto the bench he had just left as magic poured into his body. It didn’t last more than thirty seconds before the incision closed. Jensen was panting fast and hard. “You see, Jensen, you feed off of magic and I am nothing but magic.”
Jensen sat up, still trying to catch his breath, asking, “What are you?”
Logan shook his head, saying, “Not yet, pretty boy. For now, the questions are, what are you? Who are you? Where do you come from? And lastly, how can I help?”
Jensen looked directly into Logan’s eyes. “I am Jensenian Adi Kalam. Son to Goddess Kali. I come from the world above. I have been banished to the earth world because the other Gods feared me so much, it was either here or death. My mother brought me to Maddox three years ago. I was ordered to never leave here. She said that I would be needed and when the time was right, then and only then, was I to show my true self.”
“Wait, are you saying that you’re the son of fate?” Logan asked in complete amazement.
The sounds of sirens stopped Jensen from saying anything further.
CHAPTER 6
“I expect some answers by morning, Logan. For now, take your mate home and show him some care. I’m not sure what’s going on here, but I do know Jensen is a good young man,” Nick said as he gave Logan a pointed look, which Logan was sure was Nick’s way of saying, I’m not playing here and want answers, but harm Jensen and I’ll be all over your ass. And not in a good way.
“I understand, Chief. I promise I’ll have more answers by morning,” Logan replied and turned toward his mate.
Jensen was sitting on the back of the rig with the doors open as Gage moved around inside, checking on Sut. Logan took a step toward Jensen and his mate looked up at him hesitantly.
Nick joined them and looked at Jensen with soft eyes. “Jensen, whatever is going on, I just want you to know you can always come to me or my mate. You know Jagger is always happy to see you and willing to help you in any way. And now that you’re Logan’s mate, you're family. So anything you need, we’ll be there.”
Logan could see the build-up of tears in his mate’s eyes as he stared at Nick. “Thank you, Chief.”
“We’ll take care of Sutton and get the bus back to the station. Here, take the keys to my car and take your mate home. I’ll be by in the morning,” Nick said, and with that he climbed in the back of the ambulance.
Jensen stood and moved away from the vehicle as Gage jumped in the driver seat and Nick sat next to Sut. Logan grabbed the doors and closed them, making sure they were secure, then he patted the vehicle, letting Gage know he was set to go, and it began to drive away.
Logan looked at Jensen expectantly and held out his hand, happy when after a moment of hesitation, Jensen slid his hand into Logan’s. He closed his fingers around his mate’s hand and led Jensen to Nick’s SUV. He had a feeling it was going to be a long night, and not in a mind-blowing orgasmic way.

Once Logan got Jensen to his apartment, he showed him to the bathroom, then got him some clean clothes and placed them on the counter, along with a clean towel and wash cloth. Then he pulled a fresh razor and toothbrush from a drawer and left those as well, leaving Jensen to take care of his needs.
After a few minutes, Logan heard the shower go on and he made a call to the restaurant at The Cage and ordered them some food to be delivered. Once that was done, Logan stripped off his own clothes and changed into his comfortable sleep pants and loose black muscle shirt, then made his way downstairs to wait for the food.
* * * *
He couldn’t believe what was happening right now. When his mom left him here in Maddox to wait for whatever he was supposed to be waiting for, he never in a million years would have guessed he would find his mate. He never even thought he would have a mate.
But right from the start, Logan had been nice and patient with him, but he knew the time had come to tell his mate ev
erything. He just wished his mate wouldn’t be angry at him when he sent him back to his hovel in the warehouse.
For now, he would take this opportunity to wash up and put on some clean clothes and feel almost human again. Not that he ever felt totally human, but the shower and clean clothes would help make him feel less like an animal, or an invisible shadow that most people didn’t even see.
Most people of Maddox just ignored him and walked past him as if he wasn’t even there when he was around. Zen, the big elephant shifter, had always been nice to him and had always given him a sandwich or something whenever he saw him. There was also Tanner, the guy that delivered the flowers for Mrs. Pearl before she left town. Now, he worked for Zen and his sweet mate, Pascal. Tanner was always good to him too. He brought Jensen food, as well as hygiene products, and new underwear and socks sometimes.
Then there was Nick and his vampire mate, Jagger, who were always good to him, and Rhys and Dain were always trying to help him. All of them were special people to Jensen because not only did they try to help him, but they always saw him.
Jensen sighed heavily as he stared at the items Logan had left for him, then his gaze shifted to the shower. He really could use one. It had been over a week since Pascal had let him use the shower at his and Zen’s nursery.
Jensen stripped off his clothes, then stood there naked with the bundle in his hands, not sure what to do with the dirty clothes. Pascal always left him a bag to put them in, then took them from Jensen and washed them while he was in the shower.
He looked around and noticed there was a clean plastic bag lining the garbage can. Jensen pulled the bag from the can and placed his soiled clothes inside and tied it closed, then placed it on the floor near the door. He then went to the shower and turned on the water.
After making sure the temperature was perfect, Jensen grabbed the washcloth Logan had left behind and stepped under the spray. He closed his eyes and enjoyed the feel of the hot water as it pounded against his shoulders, alleviating some of the stress, and washing away some of the grime. He dropped his head back and let the water flow through his hair, loving the feel of the warmth against his scalp. Once he was sure his hair was thoroughly soaked, Jensen grabbed the bottle of shampoo he found there and poured some into his hand, then moaned in appreciation as he scrubbed his head.
When he had finished washing, Jensen grabbed the towel and dried off, then wrapped it around his waist while he used the razor and toothbrush. Once done, he put the fresh clothes on that Logan had left for him, and was happy to find that they fit. They were a little big on him, but not too much. The looseness made him feel really comfortable, and he thought of a time when he lived at home back in Arcadia. He loved to walk around in oversized sleep clothes. It always made him feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Like he was safe. It made him feel like he was home.
Tears formed in his eyes when he thought of home and how much he lost. He didn’t miss Arcadia itself, but he did miss the home he shared with his mother. Even when everything else in his life was a struggle and full of pain, once he stepped inside his home, he felt a sense of peace and security. He hadn’t felt that in three years. Well, until he stood here in his mate’s home.
Jensen shook his head, forcing those thoughts away. It was going to be hard enough when Logan sent him away. He didn’t want to think about losing this feeling again. No, this was not home, and he was not safe. He would be going back to the warehouse soon, where he belonged, so he didn’t want this wonderful feeling only to lose it.
Jensen cleaned up after himself, then grabbed the plastic bag containing his dirty clothes, and gripped the doorknob. Suddenly, he stopped as a wave of fear washed over him. Would Logan be standing there waiting for him? Would he now demand Jensen tell him everything, then show him the door when he was done? Oh, how he wished he could have stayed in Saturnalia. He had been so happy in his hidden garden. Why couldn’t he have just stayed there?
Jensen sighed. He knew why he had to leave the only place, besides his home with his mother, that he ever felt at peace and happy. He needed to be here in Maddox for something big that was coming. What, he wasn’t sure, but every day he felt like something was coming closer.
Jensen took a deep breath, then squared his shoulders. No matter what he found on the other side of this door, he would deal with it. Jensen opened the door and stepped out, a little surprised to find the beautiful loft bedroom empty. He heard soft movement coming from below and slowly made his way to the spiral staircase. Halfway down, the smell of something delicious reached his nose and Jensen almost closed his eyes and moaned from the scent.
Warm, fresh baked bread, steak, potatoes, and broccoli filled his senses and Jensen found himself following the smells. Once at the bottom of the stairs, he looked toward the kitchen and found Logan moving around the space, his back to Jensen.
Jensen took the moment to appreciate the view before him. Logan was truly a gorgeous man. His shoulder-length wavy blonde hair looked so soft, and went perfect with his pretty blue eyes Jensen remembered staring into earlier. His gaze lowered to nice shoulders and a muscled back, slim waist and hips, then landed on a nice tight, muscled ass, that made his cock twitch.
The gorgeous swimmers body that he was salivating over turned, and Jensen’s gaze was now on a nice sized bulge in the front of Logan’s soft looking sleep pants. “I ordered some food,” Logan announced, and that rich voice caused a shiver of lust to race through him.
His eyes snapped up to meet Logan’s and he was suddenly embarrassed at being caught ogling the man when he saw the knowing smirk on Logan’s face. He slowly made his way into the kitchen, then saw the table set for two, with delicious looking food set out.
“What would you like to drink? I have water, cola, and juice.”
“Um…a…water would be fine,” he said softly as he moved to the table.
“Good. Have a seat and I’ll be right there,” Logan said, then reached into a cabinet for a glass.
Jensen pulled out a chair and sat, then placed the plastic bag by his feet. “Here, let me take those for you. I’ll quickly toss them in the washer and be right back,” Logan said as he placed the glass of water in front of him, then bent and grabbed the plastic garbage bag, and disappeared from the room.
His first instinct had been to grab for the bag, afraid he would lose his clothes. Wearing Logan’s clothes was nice, and he wanted to keep them on, but he knew he would be leaving them behind when he left, and he needed something to go home in. Home? No, not home. The warehouse.
Suddenly, Logan was back and sitting in the chair opposite him, giving Jensen a nice, friendly smile. “I wasn’t sure what you liked, so I just ordered what I did. If you’d prefer something else, I can run out for it or call over to the restaurant again.”
“No, this is perfect, thank you,” Jensen answered quickly.
“Okay then, dig in.”
And with that, Logan picked up his utensils and cut a big piece of the steak, then popped it in his mouth, smiling at Jensen as he chewed.
Jensen followed Logan’s lead and cut a piece of the meat, then moaned as the rich flavor washed over his tongue. He couldn’t remember the last time he had a steak.
They ate in silence, but Jensen was surprised it wasn’t uncomfortable. He felt relaxed and just enjoyed every bite, as well as the company. Once they were both finished, and Jensen had eaten everything on his plate, Logan grabbed their dishes, rinsed them, then placed them in the dishwasher. He then cleared the rest of the table, then grabbed his and Jensen’s drinks, and headed for the living room. “Come on,” Logan said, as he kept walking.
Jensen hesitantly rose from his seat, then pushed it in under the table and slowly made his way to where Logan now sat on one end of the sofa. He guessed it was time to pay the piper.
* * * *
When Logan turned to see Jensen staring at his body, it had sent a thrill through him, knowing his mate was interested. At least that was something he could work with. Then seeing his mate in his clothes filled him with a sense of pride and ownership. And his beast was overjoyed with having their mate so close and in their domain.
